Athlete Biological Passport
BWF has had an Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) Programme since March 2016. This is managed by the Nordic Athlete Passport Management Unit (NAPMU).
BWF collects and analyses both urine and blood samples from athlete in badminton. Every urine sample is automatically analysed for any steroids. Blood samples are analysed for a wide range of prohibited substances and biological markers of the individual athlete. The passports (urine and blood sample analysis) for an individual athlete are monitored by the NAPMU who then advises on targeting individual athletes.
The objectives of BWF’s ABP programme is to:
- Identify athletes requiring further attention through intelligent and timely interpretation of Passport data.
- Enhance targeted testing of athletes to investigate unexplained variations in biological markers.
- Pursue Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) in accordance with World Anti-Doping Code Article 2.2 through changes in biological Markers of doping collated over time and which shows Adverse Passport Findings.
Target Athletes
Since 2016, BWF has had approximately 20 athletes on the APB Hematological Module. As at the first quarter 2021, BWF has a total 23 athletes on the programme:
- Registered Testing Pool – 19 athletes from 9 countries (10 male / 9 female)
- Testing Pool – 4 athletes from 3 countries (all male)
Athlete names, nationality and sex of the athletes can be seen in the list of RTP and TP published every quarter on the BWF website.
